[브레이크뉴스=이성용 기자] 한국전쟁 발발 72년만인 지난 2022년 11월 26일, 창원특례시에서 한국전쟁 민간인희생자 위령탑 제막식이 열렸다.
이날 행사는 ‘한국전쟁 민간인희생자 창원위령탑 제막식 및 합동 추모제’라는 공식명칭으로 엄숙한 가운데 진행되었으며, 추모곡 공연, 경과보고, 추모사, 위령탑 제막 및 묵념, 합동 추모제 순으로 진행됐다.
행사에는 노치수 사단법인 한국전쟁민간인희생자 창원유족회장 및 유족을 비롯해 홍남표 창원특례시장, 정근식 진실·화해를 위한 과거사 정리위원회 위원장, 시민 등 250여 명이 참석했다.
위령탑 건립은 유족회의 오랜 간절한 바람이었으며, 위령탑 제막을 통해 유족들은 오랜 세월 눈물과 설움을 가슴속으로 삼키며 살아온 한을 조금이나마 덜어낼 수 있었다.
2013년 9월, 창원시는 「6·25전쟁 전후 민간인 희생자 위령사업 지원에 관한 조례」를 제정해, 위령제 지원의 근거를 마련했으나 위령탑 건립은 대규모의 예산이 소요되는 사업으로 현실화하기는 어려웠다.

하지만 유족회의 거듭된 요청과 과거사 회복을 통한 통합 창원시 건설이라는 시의 강력한 의지로 수 많은 희생자들이 수장된 괭이바다가 보이는 마산합포구 가포동 산73번지로 입지를 확정했다.
노치수 유족회장은 “지아비를 잃은 여인, 부모를 잃은 자식들이 한 많은 세월을 숨 죽여 살아온 72년의 세월이었다”며 “혈육의 넋을 위로하고자 하는 유족들의 오랜 염원을 담은 위령탑을 눈앞에 마주하며 마음의 큰 짐을 덜어낼 수 있게 되었다”며 위령탑 건립에 노력한 창원특례시와 관계자들께 감사의 마음을 밝혔다.
홍남표 창원특례시장은 “유족들의 비워낼 수 없는 슬픔과 상처에 깊은 위로의 말을 전하며 오늘 위령탑 제막을 통해 새로운 역사를 기록하고 미래를 향해 나아가기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
