지금은 역전(逆轉)의 시대, 노인들은 그 누구든지 예외 없이 열심히 배워야만 살아남게 돼 있다.
필자는 1952년에 태어났다. 농업(실업)고등학교를 졸업, 농부였다. 농경사회에서 제4차 산업혁명시대까지를 적응하며 살아왔다.
필자는 글쓰기로 평생을 보냈다. 줄곧, 언론사-또는 그 변두리에 머물렀다. 청년 시절에는 볼펜으로 200자 원고지를 매웠다. 이어 한글 타자기를 사용했다. 컴퓨터 시대가 왔기 때문에 컴퓨터의 글자판, 자판을 두들기며 살았다. 인터넷 시대가 되면서는 스마트 폰으로 문자를 생성시키거나 유통시키는 활동을 하며 산다. 그렇게, 쉼 없이 시대에 맞게 적응해 왔었다.
돌이켜보면, 시대가 변할 때마다 새로운 문명의 이기(利器)를 익히느라고 고생을 해왔다. 계속해서 무언가를 배워야 만이 생존할 수 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 시간이 흐를수록 세상은 변하고 또 변했다.
최근에는 메타버스( (metaverse-가상현실 플랫폼) 시대가 급속하게 도래, 일상화 되어가고 있다. 이는, 과거에 보지도 듣지도 못한, 새로운 문명의 시작이다. 서울시내 가는 곳마다 무인(無人) 가게, 무인 상점들이 늘어나고 있다. 카드만으로 현금을 찾을 수 있는 은행의 무인점포들도 늘어났다.
최근 필자의 체험담 한 토막. 지난해 12월24일 점심 때, 서울지하철 회현역 5번 출구 앞(복잡함)에서 언론계 선배와 점심 약속을 했었다. 약속 장소를 찾지 못해 한참 동안이나 신세계백화점 일대를 헤맸었다.
스마트폰으로 길 찾기를 했으면 빨리 찾았을 수 있었을 터인데... 스마트 폰에 장착된 지도(gps)는 똑똑하고도 똑똑하다. 평생 서울 시내를 운전해온 택시 운전수도 모르는 곳을 척척 알려준다.
대한민국 사회는 이미 메타버스 시대로 접어들었다. 어린 아이들은 어른들이 한 번도 경험하지 못한 가상공간에서 재미있게 놀며 살아가고 있다. 그들은 스마트 폰 하나만 가지고도 하루 종일 놀 수도 있다. 10대 미만의 어린이들은 스마트 폰의 천재들이다. 나이든 노인들은 어린 아이들만 못하게 됐다. 역전(逆轉) 사회가 된 것이다.

나이 많은 노인들이 어린 아이들을 가르치는 게 아닌, 나이든 노인이 어린 아이들한테 배워야만 살 수 있게 됐다. 배워야 되는 흐름이 역전됐다. 지식이 아래 나이에서 위 나이로 흐른다. 역전의 시대다. 노인들, 누구든지, 예외 없이, 열심히 배워야만 살아남는다.
1970년대 이전에 출생한, 나이든 세대는 평생 배워야만 적응할 수 있는 사회가 됐다. 죽을 때까지 배워야만 한다. 이 세대에 태어난 이들의, 숙명(宿命)이다. moonilsuk@naver.com
