살아남으려면, 이 세상에서 하나뿐인 그 무엇? 그 무엇을 찾아내야 한다. 5월29일 점심 때, 서울 종로구 인사동에서 고예가(古藝家)를 운영해온 최효삼 대표(82세)를 만났다.
배동신 화가는(1920-2008) 전남 광주출신이다. 광주 서중 미술교사(1945~1949)를 지내 광주 출신임이 더 부각됐다. 그는 호남이 낳은 유명화가이다. 최효삼 대표는 배동신 화가의 작품 600여점(수채화-유화 뎃상)을 소장한 큰손 소장가.
배동신 화가가 서울 여의도의 신동아 아파트에 살고 있을 때부터 직접 교유해왔다고 한다. 지난 2020년 배동신 화가 탄생 100주년 기념전 때도 그가 배동신 화가의 작품 50여점을 빌려주기도 했다. ‘한남화학’ 상무를 지낸 그는 월급을 모아 그림을 사 모았다고 말했다.
배동신 화가의 그림이 6년 전에 일본에서 17억원에 매매된 적이 있다. 그때 매매된 그림은 1호 크기의 ‘여인’이었다. 지난 1983년에는 일본 오오사카에서 24호 크기의 누드화가 3억원에 팔리기도 했다. 배동신 화가의 그림 값이 뜨기 시작했다고 한다.

최효삼 대표는 1983년, 배동신 화가에게서 직접 사 들인 '누드화'를 애장품으로 줄곧 소장해오고 있다고 소개했다.
“미술품 소장가들은 작품을 그리는 화가들만큼이나 중요한 위치에 있다. 화가들이 그린 그림을 소장가들이 애써 소장하지 않으면 그림들이 뿔뿔이 흩어져 작가의 존재가 미미해지기 때문이다. 그래서 소장가들은 작가 만큼이나 중요하다.”
좋은 작가들의 작품 수백 점을 모아온 미술품 소장가의 철학이 담긴 말이다.
필자는 지난 16년 간에 걸쳐 누드화 1,300여 점을 모았다. 이 분에게서 미술품 소장가가 어떤 가치 있는 일을 하는 사람인지를 배울 수 있었다. 무언가를 배울 수 있었으니, 즐거운 오후였다.
