그로부터 얼마 뒤에 동자승이 달려와 곧 왕이 온다고 달래에게 알려주었다.
왕의 의전 담당인 각문부사 금훈(琴熏)이 따라왔다. 노란 용포를 입은 원종 앞에서 달래의 독경이 시작되었다.
유달리 독경 소리를 좋아하는 원종은 수시로 고승들을 청해 독경을 들었다. 시국이 수상하니 더 그랬다. 여몽 연합군이 매일같이 진도 앞 해남으로 내려갔다. 원종은 그들의 무운도 빌겸 독경을 듣고자 했다.
머릿속에 용이 된 김통정의 모습이 생생해 독경하는 달래의 표정이 시종 애절했다. 그런 달래가 원종에게 인상 깊었다.
원종은 절을 떠나면서 달래에게 내일 궁궐에서 발복해달라고 부탁했다.
왕은 반야심경을 특히 좋아했다. 평소에도 혼자 암송하거나 침실에 고승을 불러 독경을 들으며 잠들곤 했다. 그는 그만큼 번뇌가 많았다.
달래가 환관을 따라 원종의 편전에 들었다.
“마하반야바라밀다심경 관자재보살 행심반야바라밀다시 조견오온개공 도일체고액….”
원종은 반야심경을 언제 들어도 좋았다. 얼마나 들었던지 따로 외우지 않았는데도 저절로 따라 읊조릴 정도였다.
“인간은 오온(五蘊)이로다. 색(色)은 육신이고, 수상행식(受想行識)은 정신 작용이로다. 사실 이 오온은 텅 비었느니라. 어디 오온뿐이랴 모든 존재가 공空하도다. 이것이 적멸을 통해 열반에 이르는 지혜로다.”
달래는 독경을 끝내고 원 세조의 조부 칭기즈 칸의 예를 들어 설법했다.
“칭기즈칸이 가자니국(加茲尼國), 아프가니스탄 가즈니왕조 원정 중일 때 전진교의 구처기(丘處機)를 불렀답니다. 구처기는 나이 일흔이었지만 제자 이지상을 데리고 먼 서역까지 찾아갔습니다. 칸이 불로장수의 비결을 물었습니다. 예순 살이 된 칸도 인생 무상을 느낀 것이지요. 구처기는 무위자연의 삶을 권했습니다. 육식을 버리고 백성을 사랑하며 살인을 멀리하는 무욕의 정치를 하라는 뜻이었습니다. 칭기즈 칸은 비록 그대로 행하지 못했지만, 구처기의 맑은 풍모는 흠모했습니다. 천하를 얻었어도 정신은 공허했던 것입니다. 이것이 바로 무엇을 쥐고자 하면 잃고, 무엇을 놓고자 하면 얻는 이치입니다.”
“그러하오? 그래도 칭기즈칸에게는 구처기라는 도인이 있었구려. 과인에게는 그런 사람이 없소. 사실 김통정을 얻고 싶었는데…. 전진교는 도교의 일파 아니오. 김통정도 도덕경을 즐겨읽는 것 같더이다.”
달래가 물러나려 하는데 원종이 한마디 덧붙였다.
“내일이면 김통정의 목이 잘려 진도로 내려갈 것이오. 그러면 진도 공격을 앞둔 연합군의 사기가 하늘을 찌를 것이오. 아직도 내 말을 듣지 않는 김통정이 안타깝소. 하니 밤 깊어 수고스럽겠지만 지금이라도 김통정을 찾아가 설득해보시오. 정 말을 안 듣거든 극락왕생이라도 빌어 주구려.”
달래가 두근거리는 가슴을 누르고 무심한 듯 아뢰었다.
“김통정이 저 같은 소승의 말에 움직이겠습니까?”
“아니오. 스님의 설법에는 어떤 집착도 버리게 하는 힘이 있소. 몽골을 이겨야만 한다는 김통정의 집착도 아스라이 눈 녹듯 사라질 것이오.”
원종이 대꾸하더니 환관 균태를 불렀다.
“당장 스님을 모시고 김통정에게 가거라. 수고하는 경비병들에게는 술과 음식을 내려 위로하고, 스님이 죄인을 교화하도록 모두 자리를 비켜주어라.”
감옥 경비의 책임자는 금군의 대정(隊正) 허정(許鼎)이었다. 그는 무술이 뛰어날뿐더러 특히 올가미를 던져 도주하는 자를 생포하는 데에 능했다. dyl1010@hanmail.net

“Humans are the five aggregates. Form is the physical body, and perception is the mental function. In fact, these five aggregates are empty. Where are there only five aggregates? All beings are empty. This is the wisdom that leads to nirvana through annihilation.”
After finishing chanting the sutra, Dal-lae gave an example of Genghis Khan, the grandfather of King Sejo of Yuan, and gave a sermon.
“When Genghis Khan was on an expedition to the Ghazni Kingdom of Afghanistan, he sang Jinjeon Bridge’s Gucheogi (丘處機). Gu Cheo-gi was seventy years old, but he took his disciple Lee Ji-sang to visit the distant West Station. Khan asked the secret to longevity. Khan, now 60 years old, also felt the transience of his life. Gu Cheo-gi recommended a life of inaction. What he meant was to abandon meat-eating, love the people, and pursue a lustless politics that shuns murder. Although Genghis Khan could not do the same, he admired Gu Cheo-gi's clean appearance. Although he gained the world, his spirit was empty. This is the principle that if you try to hold on to something you will lose it, and if you try to let go of something you will gain it.”
“Is that so? Still, Genghis Khan had a monk named Gucheogi. There is no such person for Gwain. He actually wanted to get Kim Tong-jeong... . Jeon Jin-gyo is not a branch of Taoism. Kim Tong-jeong seems to enjoy reading the Tao Te Ching.”
As Dal-lae was about to leave, Wonjong added a word.
“Tomorrow, Kim Tong-jeong’s head will be cut off and taken down to Jindo. Then, the morale of the Allied forces ahead of the Jindo attack will skyrocket. I feel sorry for Kim Tong-jeong, who still doesn't listen to me.
