탈모를 진단할 때 특별히 검사를 해야 하는가 묻는다면? 한마디로 '대부분은 필요 없다'가 진실이다.
보통 질환 치료에 앞서 원인을 알고 치료방법을 선택하기 위해 검사가 필요하다. 하지만 탈모 진단은 임상 양상과 병력을 통해 간단하게 원인을 알 수 있어 검사가 필요 없는 경우가 대부분이다.
그러나 일부 탈모인들은 진단 시 특별한 검사를 시행하지 않으면 성의가 없다고 불만을 표시하는 사람들도 있다. 때로는 진료의뢰서를 요구하여 종합병원으로 가는 경우도 있다. 물론 일부 종합 병원의 경우 여러 가지 검사를 시행하는 병원도 있다.

탈모진단에 있어 검사를 시행하는 경우는 다음과 같다.

휴지기 탈모는 신체적이나 정신적 스트레스 후에 발생하는 일시적인 탈모로 2개월 이내 탈모가 멈추기 때문에 검사가 필요치 않다. 그러나 2개월 이상 탈모가 진행되는 경우에는 영양 결핍증이나 내분비 질환, 여러 질환 등이 의심되기 때문에 검사를 시행하는 것이 필요하다.
원형탈모는 자가면역 질환이지만 95%이상 자연적으로 회복되거나 스테로이드 국소치료로 완치된다. 하지만 전두탈모나 전신탈모로 진행되는 경우에는 갑상선과 자가면역 검사가 필요하다.
