필자는 함석헌 선생(1901-1989)이 쓴 “뜻으로 본 한국역사”라는 책을 탐독했었다. 눈으로만 읽은 게 아니라, 일부러 소리 내어서 읽었었다. 글에 힘이 내재돼 있었다.
이 책은 함석헌 선생이 30대 때 북한의 정주(定州) 오산(五山)학교에서 쓴 “성서적 입장(聖書的 立場)에서 본 조선역사(朝鮮歷史)”의 개정판이라고 한다. 이 분이야 말로 박정희 군사독재와 싸운 민주인사, 사상-철학가 였다. 이 분의 저서 “생각하는 백성이라야 산다”도 탐독 했었다.
김동길 연세대 교수(작고)는 함석헌 선생에 대해 “함석헌 만큼 많이 읽고 많이 아는 사람 없었고, 함석헌 만큼 말 잘하고 글 잘 쓰는 사람도 없었다.”고 회고한 바 있다. 유명 인사였음에 틀림없다.
그런데, 필자는 함석헌 선생의 친인척인 조순명 씨(88세)를 만나 “거짓 예언자” “웬말인가 함석헌”이라는 저서를 전달받았었다. 책을 세세하게 읽어본 적이 있다.
조순명 씨는 최근 “거짓 민주투사 함석헌”이라는 새 책을 발간했다. 그는 이 책에서 “한국의 간디 함석헌에게서 나는 사탄을 봤다”라고 주장했다. 함석헌 선생의 여성 행각(行脚)-혐의를 적나라하게 기록한 것.

조순명 씨는 이 책의 에필로그에서 자신이 '함석헌 선생의 외조카' 임을 밝히면서 “제가 직접 보고 들은 사실이기 때문에 당신에게 피해당한 여성들의 이름까지도 전부 실명으로 표기했다.”고, 부기(附記) 했다.
조순명 씨는 “함석헌 문제로 제일 처음 제가 찾아가 상의한 사람은 당신의 오랜 신앙동지인 송두용 선생, 그는 저에게 이렇게 충고 했다. '조순명 군이 함석헌 선생에게 대들겠다면 나는 말릴 수 없지만, 그것은 마치 계란으로 바위를 치는 것만큼이나 무모한 짓일 거요.' 그로부터 자그마치 58년이라는 세월이 흘러간 지금, 바위가 깨졌나 계란이 박살났나를 판별하는 것은 독자들의 몫”이라고 했다.
이어 “말과 행동은 정 반대일 것. 당신(함석헌)은 입으로는 천사의 말을 하면서도 행동은 그와 정 반대였다. 그렇게 보면 함석헌, 당신은 분명히 사탄이었다. 만일 함석헌이 사탄이 아니면 대한민국에는 사탄이 없다고 저는 감히 말할 수 있다”고, 강경하게 피력했다.
독일인 괴테는 나이 70세 때 19세의 소녀를 사랑했다고 한다. 재세 시, 조순명 씨로부터 비판을 받아온 함석헌 선생은 “독일 문호 괴테는 70-80대에도 젊은 여성들을 사랑했다. 그런데 왜 한국 사람인 나는 그러면 안 되나?”라고 맞받아쳤다고 한다.
그러나, 조순명 씨는 이 책에서 함석헌의 여성편력 혐의를 빗대 “사탄이 아니면 할 수 없는 짓”이라고 공박했다.
필자는 1970년대 말, 기자로서 함석헌 선생 재세 시 인터뷰를 한 바 있다. 그러하니 함석헌 선생을 직접 만나본 기자이다. 함석헌 선생이 1989년에 작고한 이후, 그해 여성지에 조순명 씨가 쓴 함석헌 선생의 여성 편력 혐의를 내용으로 한, 글을 써서 발표한 바 있기도 하다.
함석헌 선생을 신랄하게 비판한 조순명 씨의 새 책(“거짓 민주투사 함석헌”)을 통해, 한 인간(함석헌)의 빛과 그늘을 본다. 그런데, 함석헌을 아무리 지지고 볶아도, 그는 이미 저 세상 사람이 됐다. 그러나, 그의 그늘이 너무 짙고-어둡다! moonilsuk@naver.com

I thoroughly read the book “Korean History in Meaning” written by Seok-heon Ham (1901-1989). Not only did I read it with my eyes, but I also read it out loud on purpose. There was power inherent in the writing.
This book is said to be a revised version of “Joseon History from a Biblical Perspective,” written by Ham Seok-heon at Osan School in Jeongju, North Korea, when he was in his 30s. This person was a democratic figure and philosopher who fought against the military dictatorship of Park Chung-hee. He also read this author’s book “Only Thinking People Live.”
Kim Dong-gil, a professor at Yonsei University (deceased), recalled about Professor Ham Seok-heon, “There was no one who read and knew as much as Ham Seok-heon, and no one spoke or wrote as well as Ham Seok-heon.” He must have been a celebrity.
However, the author met Mr. Cho Sun-myeong, a relative of Mr. Seok-heon Ham, and received a book called “False Prophet” and “What Do You Mean? Seok-heon Ham.” He has read the book in detail.
Cho Soon-myeong recently published a new book called “False Democratic Fighter Ham Seok-heon.” In this book, he claimed, “I saw Satan in the Korean Gandhi Ham Seok-heon.” Teacher Ham Seok-heon's sexual misconduct with women - a clear record of the allegations.

In the epilogue of this book, Soon-myeong Cho revealed that he was ‘Mr. Seok-heon Ham’s maternal nephew’ and added, “I even wrote down the names of the women who were harmed by you as their real names because this is something I have personally seen and heard.”
Mr. Cho Soon-myeong said, “The first person I went to discuss the issue of Ham Seok-heon was Mr. Song Doo-yong, your long-time religious comrade, and he gave me this advice. 'If Jo Soon-myeong wants to confront Professor Ham Seok-heon, I can't stop him, but that would be as reckless as hitting a rock with an egg.' Now, almost 58 years have passed since then, and it is up to the readers to determine whether the rock was broken or the egg was smashed.”
He continued, “Words and actions should be completely opposite. You (Ham Seok-Hun) spoke like an angel, but your actions were the exact opposite. If you look at it that way, Ham Seok-heon, you were clearly Satan. “If Ham Seok-heon is not Satan, then I can boldly say that there is no Satan in the Republic of Korea,” he strongly expressed.
It is said that Goethe, a German, fell in love with a 19-year-old girl when he was 70 years old. Teacher Ham Seok-heon, who has been criticized by Cho Soon-myeong during his lifetime, said, “German writer Goethe loved young women even in his 70s and 80s. “But why can’t I, as a Korean, do that?” she reportedly responded.
However, in this book, Cho Soon-myeong criticized Ham Seok-heon's accusation of siding with women, saying, “It's something that only Satan could do.”
In the late 1970s, as a reporter, I interviewed Mr. Seok-heon Ham during his lifetime. Therefore, she is a reporter who met Mr. Seok-heon Ham in person. After Mr. Seok-heon Ham passed away in 1989, an article written by Soon-myeong Cho was published in a women's magazine that year, alleging Mr. Seok-heon Ham's philandering with women.
Through Cho Soon-myeong's new book (“False Democratic Fighter Ham Seok-heon”), which harshly criticized Mr. Ham Seok-heon, we see the light and shadow of a person (Ham Seok-heon).
