드루이즈인들은 본래 아랍어를 사용하는 아랍인이면서 드루이즈교를 믿는 사람을 지칭하고 있는데 그 수는 80만~200만 정도로 추산되고 있다. 시리아 남부 지역에 55만 명 정도가 살다 보니 그 숫자가 가장 많으며 그 다음으로 레바논, 이스라엘, 요르단에 분포하고 베네수엘라, 호주, 미국, 캐나다로 이민을 가서 그 곳에서도 많이 거주하고 있다. 다만 해외로 이주한 드루이즈인들의 상당수가 그들의 정체성과 드루이즈 종교를 완전히 상실하고 현지인들과 동화되는 편이 많았다. 특히 라틴 아메리카로 이주한 경우 거의 다 동화되어 사라지는 바람에 이들을 찾기 어렵다고 한다. 그 이유는 드루이즈의 교리가 구전으로 전해지다 보니 유태교와 같은 다른 종교적 소수자 공동체보다 정체성 유지하는 것이 더 어렵기 때문이다.
드루이즈인은 다른 중동의 민족들과 같이 독자적인 언어나 방언을 사용하는 것은 아니다. 하지만 이름을 사용하는 것에서 이슬람의 직접적인 영향이 강한 무슬림 아랍인에 비해 이슬람 이전의 아랍어 인명을 보존하고 있다. 이에 학술적으로 드루이즈인들은 민족 종교집단으로 분류되고 있는 실정이다. 특히 이스라엘 드루이즈인들은 주로 이스라엘 북부의 22개 촌락에 거주하며 독립적인 문화, 사회, 종교적 공동체를 이루고 있는데 이들은 모두 이스라엘 시민권자라서 이스라엘에서는 유태인, 체르케스인과 동등한 병역의무를 지고 있으며 이들은 유태인, 이스라엘 정부와 아주 묘한 관계에 있다. 오늘날의 드루이즈인 공동체들은 군 장성과 경찰 간부 및 대학교수와 외교관으로 기용될 정도로 매우 높은 대접을 받고 있는 비(非) 유태인 공동체로 자리 잡았다.
그러나 이스라엘 치하에서 살고 있는 드루이즈인들 가운데 극소수는 이스라엘에 대한 충성을 거부하면서 아랍 민족주의를 선동하다가 헌병대와 군사 정보국에 체포되어 형사 재판을 받았다. 이에 이스라엘 정부는 그들에게 부여된 국적을 모두 박탈하고 석방되는 즉시 국외로 추방시켰으며 이들은 헤즈볼라에 들어가 이스라엘에 대한 많은 정보를 제공하고 있다. 다만 골란고원의 원주민이라 할 수 있는 골란고원 드루이즈인들은 1981년 이스라엘에 합병된 이후, 이스라엘 정부의 강제적인 이스라엘 시민권 부여를 거부했다. 이들 주민들은 대거 헤르몬 산 일대에 살고 있는데 주로 마즈달 샴스(Majdal Shams), 골란고원 중부 지역의 부카타 마사데(Buq'ata, Mas'ade)에 집단으로 거주하고 있다. 이들은 현재도 이스라엘 시민권이 아닌 '이스라엘 영주권"을 보유하고 있는 실정이다.
따라서 이들은 이스라엘의 병역 의무와 이스라엘 시민으로서의 권리를 가지지 않고 있으며, 해외로 이동할 시, 이스라엘 정부에서 일종의 한시적 통행증을 발급해주고 있다. 다만 골란고원에 거주하는 드루이즈인들은 개별적으로 이스라엘 시민권을 신청할 권리를 보유했으며, 이 경우 투표권과 이스라엘 의회인 크네세트(Knesset)에 출마할 수 있는 권리를 부여받고, 이스라엘 여권을 받게 된다. 한편 시리아에 거주하고 있는 드루이즈인들은 소수 종교를 보호하는 알라위파 알 아사드 정권에 매우 우호적이다. 이들은 시리아 내전에서도 아사드 친 정부파로 활약했는데 유명한 인물로는 시리아 공화국 수비대 104여단장으로 재직하면서 시리아 동부 유프라테스 강 유역의 도시인 데이르에조르(Deir ez-Zor)를 ISIS의 집단 대공세로부터 지켜낸 방어전의 귀재 잇샴 자헤라딘(Issam Zahreddine) 장군이 있다.
시리아에 거주하고 있는 드루이즈인들도 당연히 이스라엘에 대한 관점은 본토 시리아인과 다르지 않으며 이스라엘에 매우 적대적이다. 이들은 이스라엘의 영토 합병에 분개하며 골란고원 일대에 대한 시리아의 영토 주장을 맹렬히 지지하고 있는 실정이다. 반대로 이스라엘 인구의 2%를 차지하고 있는 이스라엘 드루이즈인들은 이스라엘과 좋은 관계를 유지하고 그들을 옹호하다 보니 팔레스타인과 아랍권에서는 증오의 대상으로 여겨지고 있다. 헤즈볼라도 자국인 레바논과 시리아의 드루이즈인들과는 우호적으로 잘 지내고 있지만 이스라엘의 드루이즈인은 이스라엘에 충성하고 있는 노예집단과 같다며 멸시하고 증오한다. 실제로 2006년에 이스라엘 군이 레바논을 침공했을 때 이스라엘 드루이즈인들의 알 드루이즈 헤르베 바탈리온(All-Druze Herve Battallion) 사단이 헤즈볼라와 전투를 벌였었다.
그런데 이스라엘의 드루이즈인들은 레바논의 드루이즈인들을 절대 공격하지 않았다. 몇 안 되는 자신들의 동족인 것도 있지만 시리아 드루이즈와는 달리, 레바논 드루이즈들까지 적으로 돌릴 필요는 없기 때문이다. 그런데 시리아 내전 때는 이스라엘 드루이즈인들이 시리아 반군들에게 학살당하고 있으니 학살당하는 동족들을 구해 달라고 이스라엘 정부에 건의했으나 이미 복잡한 국제 정세에서 이미 시리아 반군의 편에 서고 있는 이스라엘 정부는 이를 철저히 무시하고 개입하지 않았다. 물론 이들과 처한 환경이 다른 레바논의 드루이즈인들은 헤즈볼라를 지지하는 사람들도 제법 존재한다. 중동에서 기독교 비율이 가장 높은 국가인 레바논은 수많은 종파가 복잡하게 얽힌 다종교 국가이기 때문에 종파간의 내전을 이미 겪어 보았고 다시 내전이 발생하면 국가 소멸로 갈 수 있기에 군의 사령관은 드루이즈에게 할당하는 방식으로 안배해 주고 있는 편이다.

Druids originally refer to Arabs who speak Arabic and believe in Druidism, and their number is estimated at between 800,000 and 2 million. The largest number is around 550,000 in southern Syria, followed by Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan, and many have immigrated to Venezuela, Australia, the United States, and Canada, where they also reside. However, many Druids who migrated abroad completely lost their identity and Druid religion and assimilated with the locals. In particular, those who migrated to Latin America are said to have almost all assimilated and disappeared, making it difficult to find them. This is because Druids’ doctrines are passed down orally, making it more difficult for them to maintain their identity than other religious minority communities such as Judaism.
The Druids do not use their own language or dialect like other Middle Eastern peoples. However, unlike Muslim Arabs who are directly influenced by Islam, they preserve pre-Islamic Arabic names.
