현대차·기아는 3일 현대차·기아 기술연구소(경기 화성시 남양읍 소재)에서 양희원 현대차·기아 R&D 본부장(사장)과 김창환 전동화에너지솔루션 부문 부사장, 이규호 코오롱그룹 부회장, 안상현 코오롱스페이스웍스 대표이사 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘전략적 미래 모빌리티 소재 사업 파트너십’을 체결했다고 밝혔다.
현대차·기아는 이번 업무협약을 통해 코오롱그룹의 자회사인 코오롱스페이스웍스에 투자하고, 모빌리티 소재 경쟁력 강화를 위한 다양한 협력에 나선다는 계획이다.
코오롱스페이스웍스는 자동차, 항공기 등에 쓰이는 소재를 개발 및 생산하는 첨단 복합소재 전문회사다. 복합소재는 탄소섬유와 유리섬유 등을 고분자 재료와 혼합한 신소재로, 철보다 강하지만 훨씬 가벼운 특성을 가지고 있다.
현대차·기아는 내연기관 차량에서 친환경 차량으로의 전환이 가속화되는 상황에서, 코오롱스페이스웍스의 모빌리티 소재 기술과 생산 역량을 적극 활용해 미래 친환경 모빌리티 경쟁력 강화에 나선다.
구체적으로 수소저장 용기 소재와 배터리 커버 성능 개선을 위한 공동 연구와 개발을 통해 제품 경쟁력을 확보하고, 주요 판매 시장으로 꼽히는 유럽연합(EU)의 ELV(차량순환성 및 폐차관리규정) 등 글로벌 친환경 규제에 대응할 계획이다.
코오롱스페이스웍스와 공동 개발해 현재 전동화 비즈니스 플랫폼 ST1에 적용 중인 무도장 복합재 성형기술도 고도화한다. 이를 통해 향후 기아 차종에도 적용을 검토한다.
이 밖에도 현대차·기아는 코오롱스페이스웍스와의 기술 교류 확대를 통해 선순환 성장 구조를 확보할 계획이다.
양희원 사장은 “자동차 산업 패러다임의 전환과 함께 친환경 소재 적용이 확대되고 있는 추세”라며 “코오롱스페이스웍스와의 협력을 통해 다양한 차량용 복합소재를 선제적으로 개발하고, 기술 혁신을 통한 사업 경쟁력을 제고할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
한편, 현대차·기아는 코오롱스페이스웍스 외에도 다양한 글로벌 파트너와의 협력을 지속적으로 확대해 나갈 계획이다.
