(브레이크뉴스인천 문광수 기자) 인천시 시립박물관이 23일, 시민 참여 인기 답사 프로그램 ‘타박타박 인천’의 올해 첫 답사 주제를 ‘아펜젤러가 연 근대의 길’로 정해 운영한다고 밝혔다.
시립박물관에 따르면, 올해는 한국 최초의 개신교 선교사 헨리 아펜젤러(1858~1902)가 한국에 온 지 140주년 되는 해다.
아펜젤러는 임신한 아내, 장로회 선교사 언더우드와 함께 1885년 4월 5일 부활절날 제물포항에 첫발을 디뎠다.
아펜젤러는 서울에서 한국 최초의 감리교회인 정동제일교회와 인재의 산실 배재학당을 세우고 성경 번역과 잡지·서적 출판, 독립협회·독립신문 지원 등 폭넓은 근대화 업적을 남겼다.
그러나 그에 앞서 40일가량 인천에 머무는 동안 본격적인 한국 선교를 준비하면서 내리교회의 씨앗을 뿌렸고 한국 초등학교 발상지 중 하나인 영화학교의 연원을 만들었다.
이번 ‘타박타박’ 답사는 4월 30일과 5월 17일 두 차례에 걸쳐 이루어진다.
아펜젤러가 배에서 내렸던 부두 자리(한국기독교100주년기념탑)부터 시작해 그가 묵었던 한국 최초의 호텔(대불호텔), 그의 자취가 서린 내리교회, 한국 초등교육의 발상지 중 하나인 영화초등학교를 거쳐 도원역에 이르는 약 4㎞의 여정으로 구성된다.
답사는 배성수 인천시립박물관 유물관리부장이 함께 걸으며 각 장소에 담긴 역사와 아펜젤러의 발자취를 자세히 해설할 예정이다.

아펜젤러는 1902년 성경 번역 회의에 참석하기 위해 목포로 가던 중 선박 충돌 사고로 44세에 순직했다.
입국 당시 키 179㎝, 체중 91㎏의 건장한 체격이었던 그는 15년간 한국에서 선교와 교육에 헌신한 끝에 체중이 30㎏ 줄고 허리가 굽는 등 친구들이 못 알아볼 정도였다고 전해진다.
이번 ‘타박타박’ 답사는 그의 활동이 시작된 인천을 중심으로, 한국 근대화에 끼친 발자취를 직접 걸으며 되새겨보는 뜻깊은 시간이 될 것이다.
