브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 현대제철이 지난 3월 환경부로부터 철근에 대한 ‘저탄소 제품 인증’을 획득했다.
현대제철은 2023년 국내 최초로 H형강에 저탄소 제품 인증을 받은데 이어, 이번에는 철근 제품이 인증을 취득함으로써 건설용 강재 부문의 탄소저감 제품 포트폴리오를 다각화할 수 있게 됐다.
저탄소 제품 인증은 환경부로부터 부여받은 환경성적표지(EPD, Enviromental Product Declaration) 인증 제품 중에서 탄소 배출을 저감하거나 동종제품 평균 대비 낮은 탄소배출량을 보유한 제품에게 주어지는 인증이다.
특히, 저탄소 인증 제품은 환경부에서 인정한 녹색제품에도 해당, ‘녹색제품 구매 촉진에 관한 법률’에 의해 공공기관의 의무 구매 제품으로 채택된다. 또한, 주거 및 비주거 건축물에 저탄소 제품 자재를 사용하게되면 건물의 환경성을 평가하는 ‘녹색건축인증(G-SEED)’에서 가산점도 받을 수 있다. 녹색건축인증에서 우수 등급 이상을 받는 건축물은 용적률 완화, 취득세 경감 등 혜택도 주어진다.
현대제철은 스크랩을 주 원료로 하는 전기로 방식을 통해 철근 및 형강 제품을 생산하고 있다. 스크랩을 재활용해 제품을 생산한다는 점에서 이 제품들은 철광석, 석탄을 주 원료로 사용한 고로 방식에 비해 낮은 탄소배출량을 가진다는 특성이 있다.
한편, 현대제철은 2024년 12월 현대건설과 함께 탄소저감형 건축모델을 구축해 탄소중립사회를 선도하겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 탄소저감형 건축모델의 핵심은 건설 자재를 탄소저감형 자재로 교체해 탄소배출을 줄이는 것으로 이 건축모델에는 현대제철에서 생산한 탄소저감형 철근과 형강이 사용된다.
