【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=대구시와 엑스코(EXCO)가 ‘2028년 제15회 세계여과총회’(World Filtration Congress, 이하 WFC 2028) 유치에 성공했다.
세계 최대 규모의 필터 및 분리기술 분야 국제 학술대회가 대구에서 열리는 것은 이번이 처음이다.
이번 유치는 대구시 국제회의 전담 조직인 엑스코가 유치위원장 추광호 경북대 교수를 중심으로 한국막학회, 대한환경공학회와 협력해 추진했다. 지난 7월 2일 프랑스 보르도에서 열린 국제여과위원회(INDEFI) 회의에서 대구는 중국 베이징을 제치고 최종 개최지로 확정됐다.
WFC 2028은 오는 2028년 9월 4일부터 8일까지 5일간 엑스코에서 열린다. 전 세계 40여 개국에서 약 1,200명의 전문가가 참가해 주제 강연, 기술 워크숍, 전시회, 네트워킹 행사 등을 진행하며, 약 30억 원 규모의 직·간접 경제 효과가 기대된다.
대구는 국내 유일의 국가물산업클러스터, 한국물기술인증원, 수처리 전문기업과 환경 분석 장비 산업 등 물 산업 인프라가 집적된 도시다. 또한 2015년 세계물포럼 개최 경험, 유치위원장 추 교수의 국제 네트워크, 한국관광공사의 전폭적인 지원, 엑스코의 체계적인 유치 전략이 이번 유치 성공을 이끌었다.
엑스코 김규식 사업부사장은 “이번 총회 유치를 통해 대구의 물 산업 경쟁력이 한층 강화될 것”이라며 “지역 기업의 해외 진출과 수출 확대는 물론, 대구를 산업과 문화가 어우러진 글로벌 마이스(MICE) 도시로 널리 알릴 수 있는 계기가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
한편 엑스코는 2024년 8월부터 마이스뷰로실을 신설하고, 국제회의 유치 전담조직으로서 지역 마이스 산업 지원과 마이스 협의체 운영 등 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

Daegu City and EXCO have successfully hosted the 15th World Filtration Congress (WFC 2028).
This is the first time that the world's largest international academic conference on filter and separation technology is being held in Daegu.
This hosting was promoted by EXCO, the organization dedicated to international conferences in Daegu City, in cooperation with the Korean Society of Membrane Engineers and the Korean Society of Environmental Engineers, led by Professor Kwang-ho Choo of Kyungpook National University, the hosting committee chairman. At the International Filtration Commission (INDEFI) meeting held in Bordeaux, France on July 2, Daegu was confirmed as the final host city, beating out Beijing, China.
WFC 2028 will be held at EXCO for five days from September 4 to 8, 2028. Approximately 1,200 experts from 40 countries around the world will participate in thematic lectures, technology workshops, exhibitions, and networking events, and direct and indirect economic effects of approximately KRW 3 billion are expected.
Daegu is a city where the water industry infrastructure is concentrated, including the only national water industry cluster in Korea, the Korea Water Technology Certification Institute, water treatment specialists, and environmental analysis equipment industries. In addition, the experience of hosting the World Water Forum in 2015, the international network of Professor Chu, the chairman of the hosting committee, the full support of the Korea Tourism Organization, and EXCO’s systematic hosting strategy led to the success of this hosting.
EXCO Vice President of Business Kim Gyu-sik said, “By hosting this general meeting, Daegu’s water industry competitiveness will be further strengthened,” and “It will be an opportunity to promote Daegu as a global MICE city where industry and culture come together, as well as to expand overseas expansion and exports of local companies.”
Meanwhile, EXCO will establish a MICE Bureau in August 2024 and is actively engaged in activities such as supporting the local MICE industry and operating the MICE Council as an organization dedicated to hosting international conferences.
