(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 인천시 보건환경연구원이 11일, 인천시교육청과 협력해 ‘학교 중심의 글로벌 톱텐 환경도시 In-Ch-E-On 조성’ 사업을 추진하며, 학생 건강 보호와 기후위기 대응에 나섰다고 밝혔다.
보건환경연구원에 따르면, 이번 사업은 학교숲 조성과 연계해 숲의 대기질 개선 효과를 과학적으로 검증하고, 체험하는 환경 교육을 통해 미래세대의 기후위기 대응 실천력을 높이는 것을 목표로 한다.
대기질 정밀조사는 인천시와 교육청이 조성한 학교숲을 중심으로 추진된다.
학교숲이 조성된 초·중·고등학교 가운데 4개교를 대상으로, 대기오염 이동 측정 차량과 도로 재비산먼지 측정차량을 활용해 조사가 진행된다.
학교 주변의 미세먼지 농도와 가스상 물질, 오존, 도로 재비산먼지 등 유입 요인을 측정하고, 학교숲이 실제로 대기질 개선에 어떤 역할을 하는지 정밀하게 평가할 예정이다.
학교숲은 탄소흡수와 폭염 완화, 생태적 회복력을 갖춘 공간으로, 인천시가 기후위기 대응과 지속가능한 도시환경 구축을 위해 중점 추진 중인 녹색환경 기반 사업이다.
보건환경연구원은 이번 조사를 통해 학교숲이 실질적인 대기환경 개선에 기여한다는 점을 과학적으로 입증하고, 학교 중심 녹색환경 확산 정책의 실효성을 강화할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
아울러, 기후위기 대응을 주제로 한 환경아카데미 교육도 함께 운영한다. 미세먼지, 탄소중립, 자원순환, 에너지 전환 등 다양한 주제와 더불어 우리 학교 대기질을 학생들이 직접 측정하고 확인하는 체험 교육으로 구성되며, 수료자와 해당 학교에는 ‘환경지킴이’ 인증서를 수여할 계획이다.
곽완순 시 보건환경연구원장은 “이번 사업을 통해 과학적인 대기환경 진단과 실천 중심의 환경교육을 병행함으로써, 생태적 안전 기반을 갖춘 탄소중립 학교 실현에 한 걸음 더 다가설 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다”고 말했다.

Incheon Metropolitan City Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 11th that it is promoting the 'Creating In-Ch-E-On, a Global Top Ten Environmental City Centered on Schools' project in cooperation with Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, and has stepped up to protect students' health and respond to the climate crisis.
According to the Health and Environment Research Institute, this project aims to scientifically verify the effect of forests on improving air quality in conjunction with the creation of school forests and to enhance the practical ability of future generations to respond to the climate crisis through experiential environmental education.
The air quality precision survey will be conducted mainly on school forests created by Incheon Metropolitan City and the Office of Education.
Among the elementary, middle, and high schools where school forests have been created, a survey will be conducted using air pollution mobile measurement vehicles and road re-suspended dust measurement vehicles.
The concentration of fine dust around the school, gaseous substances, ozone, and road re-suspended dust will be measured, and the inflow factors such as these will be precisely evaluated to determine what role school forests actually play in improving air quality.
School forests are spaces that absorb carbon, alleviate heat waves, and have ecological resilience, and are a green environment-based project that Incheon City is focusing on in order to respond to the climate crisis and build a sustainable urban environment.
Through this survey, the Korea Institute of Environmental Research expects to scientifically prove that school forests contribute to improving the actual air environment and strengthen the effectiveness of the school-centered green environment expansion policy.
In addition, an environmental academy education program will be operated with the theme of responding to the climate crisis. It consists of experiential education where students directly measure and check the air quality of our school along with various topics such as fine dust, carbon neutrality, resource circulation, and energy transition, and we plan to award the ‘Environmental Guardian’ certificate to those who complete the program and the corresponding school.
Kwak Wan-soon, the director of the city’s Health and Environment Research Institute, said, “Through this project, we expect to be able to get one step closer to realizing a carbon-neutral school with an ecological safety foundation by conducting scientific air quality diagnosis and practice-oriented environmental education in parallel.”
