이번 방문은 이재명 대통령의 특별 지시에 따른 것으로, 김 총리는 화백컨벤션센터(HICO)에서 열린 준비상황 보고회를 시작으로 회의장, 만찬장 등 주요 시설을 직접 둘러봤다.
이날 보고회에는 김민석 총리를 비롯해 윤창렬 국무조정실장, 김진아 외교부 2차관, 윤성미 APEC 고위관리회의(SOM) 의장, 김지준 APEC 준비기획단장 등 정부 관계자들이 참석했으며, 주낙영 경주시장과 김학홍 경북도 행정부지사, 이성우 대한상공회의소 APEC 추진본부장, 구자옥 행사대행사 총괄 등 민간 인사들도 함께해 민관 합동으로 준비상황을 점검했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “정상회의가 불과 110여 일 앞으로 다가온 만큼, 개최도시로서 마지막까지 전력을 다하겠다”며 “숙박, 교통, 의료, 관광, 도시경관 개선 등 손님맞이 준비에 총력을 기울이고 있다”고 말했다.
이어 그는 “이번 회의가 단발성 이벤트에 그치지 않고 대한민국 외교사에 의미 있는 성과로 남기 위해 APEC 기념공원 조성, 경주 역사문화포럼 창설, 보문단지 리노베이션 등 후속 사업에 대한 정부의 지속적인 지원이 필요하다”고 강조했다.
경주시는 회의장, 미디어센터, 만찬장 등 주요 인프라를 중심으로 기반 조성을 완료하는 한편, 시민 참여 캠페인, 전통문화 콘텐츠 강화, 지역 특산물 홍보 등 다각적인 준비를 진행 중이다. 특히 ‘대한민국 대표선수’라는 책임감 아래 의료·수송·통역 인력 확보, 주요 동선 경관 정비, 관광·문화 자원 확충 등 전방위 대응체계를 구축하고 있다.
김민석 국무총리는 “경주는 유서 깊은 역사와 풍부한 문화적 자산을 갖춘 도시로, APEC을 통해 대한민국의 품격을 세계에 알릴 수 있을 것”이라며 “정부도 APEC 정상회의의 성공적 개최를 위해 끝까지 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 주낙영 시장은 이날 김 총리에게 경주의 전통 명주(名酒)를 APEC 공식 만찬주로 채택해 줄 것을 건의하며, 지역 산업과 문화자산 홍보의 계기로 삼아줄 것을 요청했다.

Mayor Joo Nak-young of Gyeongju said, “With the summit just 110 days away, we will do our best as the host city until the end,” and added, “We are putting all our efforts into preparing to welcome our guests, including improving accommodations, transportation, medical care, tourism, and cityscape.”
He continued, “In order for this summit to not be a one-time event but to remain a meaningful achievement in the diplomatic history of the Republic of Korea, the government needs to continue to support follow-up projects, such as the creation of the APEC Memorial Park, the establishment of the Gyeongju History and Culture Forum, and the renovation of the Bomun Complex.”
Gyeongju City is completing the foundation for major infrastructure, such as the conference hall, media center, and banquet hall, while also carrying out diverse preparations, such as citizen participation campaigns, strengthening traditional culture content, and promoting local specialties. In particular, under the sense of responsibility as a “representative athlete of the Republic of Korea,” it is establishing an all-out response system, including securing medical, transportation, and interpretation personnel, improving the landscape of major routes, and expanding tourism and cultural resources.
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said, “Gyeongju is a city with a long history and rich cultural assets, and through APEC, we will be able to promote the dignity of the Republic of Korea to the world,” and added, “The government will not spare its support until the end to successfully host the APEC summit.” Meanwhile, Mayor Joo Nak-young suggested to Prime Minister Kim that Gyeongju’s traditional famous liquor be adopted as the official APEC banquet wine, and requested that it be used as an opportunity to promote local industries and cultural assets.
