(브레이크뉴스인천 박상도 기자) 인천 서구가 지난 21일 구청장실에서 전수식을 열고 고(故) 임용순 상병의 자녀 임영호 씨에게 화랑무공훈장을 전수했다고 밝혔다.
서구에 따르면, 이날 전수식은 6·25전쟁 당시 훈장을 받지 못한 수훈자의 유가족을 찾아 훈장을 수여하며 호국영웅의 공훈을 기리는 사업으로 이뤄졌다. 국방부 장관을 대신해 강범석 서구청장이 훈장을 전수했다.
1926년 출생한 고 임용순 상병은 전쟁이 한창인 1951년 입대해 6사단 공병대대에서 복무했다. 1954년 훈장 수여가 결정됐지만 당시 급박한 전후 상황 속에 훈장을 받지 못했고 오늘에서야 훈장이 자녀에게 전해졌다.
훈장을 전해 받은 임영호 씨는 “아버지의 훈장을 찾아주신 국방부와 예를 갖춰 훈장을 전해준 서구청에 감사드린다”고 소감을 전했다.
강범석 서구청장은 “비교적 최근 작고하신 유공자에게 직접 훈장이 전해졌으면 하는 아쉬움과 함께 위로와 감사의 말씀을 유가족에게 전한다”며 “서구 또한 참전유공자의 희생과 헌신에 보답하기 위해 보다 나은 예우에 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 서구는 이날 전수식을 포함해 지난 2022년부터 호국영웅 15명의 무공훈장을 유가족에게 전달했다.
