【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=포항시와 포항교육지원청이 11일 포항국제전시컨벤션센터(POEX) 확장을 위한 첫 공개 협의회를 개최했다.
시는 지난해 7월부터 북구 장성동 영일대해수욕장 인근 옛 미군부대 캠프리비 부지에 총 연면적 63,818㎡로 2천여 명을 수용할 수 있는 컨벤션홀, 7,183㎡ 면적의 전시장, 2,128㎡ 면적의 컨벤션홀, 11개 중·소회의실, 시민 휴식공간, 상업·업무시설, 루프탑 등을 갖춘 POEX 1단계 건립을 추진하고 있다.
2026년 말, 2027년 초 완공 예정인 이 건물에 초대형 행사 및 국제회의 유치를 위한 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해 2단계 확장을 위한 인접한 포항동부초등학교 부지 확보가 핵심 과제로 떠올랐으나 지난 3년간 동부초 부지 이전 문제로 교육청과의 협의가 답보 상태에 머물렀다.
이날 열린 공개 협의회에서는 그동안 쌓였던 오해를 풀고 상생 협력의 의지를 다지며 앞으로 매월 1회 정례 협의체 구성을 제안해 보다 열린 마음으로 논의를 이어가기로 합의했다.
이상현 본부장은 “오늘 첫 공개 협의 개최 자체가 큰 의미를 가진다”며 “앞으로 동부초 이전과 POEX 건립 2단계 사업에 긍정적인 결과를 기대한다”고 밝혔다.
한편 포항시는 이번 협의를 계기로 포항국제전시컨벤션센터가 지역의 미래 성장 동력으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 교육청과 지속 협력해 나갈 계획이다.

At the open consultation meeting held today, the participants resolved accumulated misunderstandings, reaffirmed their commitment to mutually beneficial cooperation, and agreed to establish a regular monthly consultative body to continue discussions with a more open mind.
Director Lee Sang-hyun stated, "The holding of today's first open consultation is significant in itself. We anticipate positive results for the relocation of Dongbu Elementary School and the second phase of the POEX construction project."
Meanwhile, Pohang City plans to continue working with the Office of Education to ensure that the Pohang International Exhibition and Convention Center establishes itself as a future growth engine for the region through this agreement.
