【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=한국과 호주의 경제협력 상징인 ‘한-호주 경제협력위원회(한-호 경협위)’ 제46차 합동회의가 17일 서울 여의도 FKI타워에서 열렸다.

이번 회의에는 한국 측 위원장인 장인화 포스코그룹 회장을 비롯해 호-한 경협위(AKBC) 마틴 퍼거슨 위원장, 산업통상자원부 박종원 통상차관보, 제프 로빈슨 주한호주대사 등 양국 정·재계 인사 약 200여 명이 참석했다.
회의 주제는 ‘한-호주의 산업·혁신·지속가능성 강화 방안’으로, 핵심광물과 청정에너지, 산업안전, 재해 대응 등 시대적 과제에 대한 협력 방안이 폭넓게 논의됐다. 특히 올해 처음으로 ‘AI 기반 산업안전 및 재난대응’이 특별의제로 상정돼 양국 협력의 외연을 넓혔다.
장인화 회장은 개회사를 통해 “양국이 경제·산업 투자 확대를 넘어 지역 상생과 안전, 재난 대응까지 협력 분야를 확장하며 지속가능한 미래를 모색하길 기대한다”고 말했다.
회의에서는 5개 협력 분야가 집중 논의됐다. ▲핵심광물 공급망 세션에서는 포스코필바라리튬솔루션의 수산화리튬 생산, ‘호주핵심자원연구소’ 활동 등 양국의 성과를 공유했다. ▲산업안전·재난대응 세션에서는 포스코그룹이 신규 사회공헌사업을 소개했다. 포스코는 호주 뉴사우스웨일스주가 보유한 선진 재난 대응 체계를 벤치마킹해 전국재해구호협회와 함께 모의훈련, 대피시설 개선, 소방장비 지원 등을 추진할 계획이다.
포스코그룹은 1970년대 초 철광석 구매를 시작으로 호주와 핵심광물 협력을 이어왔다. 현재 매년 약 70억 달러 규모, 전체 구매량의 70%에 달하는 철강 원료를 호주에서 조달하고 있다. 또한 로이힐 철광석 광산 개발, HBI(Hot Briquetted Iron) 프로젝트, 세넥스에너지 인수를 통한 천연가스 사업 확대 등으로 협력 분야를 확장하고 있다.
이번 합동회의는 핵심 자원 개발에서 청정에너지, AI 기반 안전관리까지 협력 영역을 확대하며 양국 경제 협력의 미래 지향적 비전을 제시했다는 평가다.

POSCO Group Chairman In-Hwa Chang Leads Expanding Korea-Australia Economic Cooperation, From Core Minerals to Safety and Coexistence
The 46th joint meeting of the Korea-Australia Economic Cooperation Committee (K-AEC), a symbol of economic cooperation between Korea and Australia, was held on the 17th at the FKI Tower in Yeouido, Seoul.
Approximately 200 people from both countries' political and business circles attended the meeting, including POSCO Group Chairman In-Hwa Chang, who chairs the Korean committee, as well as Australia-Korea Economic Cooperation Committee (AKBC) Chairman Martin Ferguson, Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry and Energy Park Jong-won, and Australian Ambassador to Korea Geoff Robinson.
The meeting was themed "Strengthening Industry, Innovation, and Sustainability in Korea and Australia." The discussion broadly explored cooperation on pressing issues such as core minerals, clean energy, industrial safety, and disaster response. Notably, "AI-based Industrial Safety and Disaster Response" was added to the special agenda for the first time this year, broadening the scope of bilateral cooperation.
In his opening remarks, Chairman Jang In-hwa stated, "I hope that both countries will expand their cooperation beyond economic and industrial investment to include regional coexistence, safety, and disaster response, thereby seeking a sustainable future."
The meeting focused on five areas of cooperation. The session on core mineral supply chains shared the achievements of both countries, including POSCO Pilbara Lithium Solutions' lithium hydroxide production and the activities of the Australian Core Resources Institute. The session on industrial safety and disaster response introduced POSCO Group's new social contribution initiatives. Benchmarking the advanced disaster response system of the Australian state of New South Wales, POSCO plans to collaborate with the National Disaster Relief Association on mock drills, evacuation facility improvements, and firefighting equipment support.
POSCO Group has been collaborating with Australia on core minerals since the early 1970s, beginning with the purchase of iron ore. Currently, the group sources approximately $7 billion worth of steel raw materials from Australia annually, accounting for 70% of its total purchases. Furthermore, the two countries are expanding their cooperation to include the development of the Roy Hill iron ore mine, the Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) project, and the expansion of the natural gas business through the acquisition of Senex Energy.
This joint meeting is being evaluated as presenting a future-oriented vision for bilateral economic cooperation, expanding the scope of cooperation from core resource development to clean energy and AI-based safety management.
