재판에 앞서 법원 앞에서는 기자회견도 열렸다. 김덕수 공동대표는 “사회정의 실현을 위해 책임자 처벌은 불가피하다”고 했으며, 한재열 봉사위원장은 “방지하지 못한 고위 공직자 역시 법적 책임을 져야 한다”고 목소리를 높였다.
범대본은 이달 초 대법원 앞에서 공정재판을 촉구하는 시민 호소문과 50만 명의 서명부를 제출했으며, 현재도 포항 전역에서 서명 운동을 이어가고 있다.

The Pan-Pohang Countermeasures Headquarters emphasizes that this trial goes beyond simple criminal punishment and can serve as crucial evidence for ongoing civil litigation. Chairperson Mo Seong-eun appealed to the public, saying, "To provide relief to the victims, uncovering the truth and punishing those responsible are absolutely necessary."
A press conference was held in front of the court prior to the trial. Co-chairperson Kim Deok-su stated, "Punishing those responsible is inevitable to achieve social justice," and volunteer committee chairperson Han Jae-yeol asserted, "High-ranking public officials who failed to prevent this must also be held legally accountable."
Earlier this month, the Pan-Pohang Countermeasures Headquarters submitted a citizen appeal and a petition with 500,000 signatures in front of the Supreme Court, calling for a fair trial. The petition is currently being collected throughout Pohang.
