【브레이크뉴스 대구】진예솔 기자=대구 북구청이 오는 18일 대구일중학교 체육관에서 '제8회 대구 북구 전국 영어 콘테스트'를 연다.
교육국제화특구 사업의 일환으로 올해 8회째 열리는 이번 대회는 영어 퀴즈 형식으로 진행된다. 오전 10시에는 초등학교 5~6학년 대상 초등부 대회가, 오후 3시에는 중학생 대상 중등부 대회가 각각 열린다.
지난 9월 1일부터 17일까지 접수한 결과, 대구뿐 아니라 부산, 울산을 비롯해 경기도, 강원도, 충청도, 경상도, 전라도 등 전국 초등학생과 중학생 748명이 신청했다.
9월 18일부터 29일까지 12일간 치열한 온라인 예선을 거쳐 초등부 73명, 중등부 90명이 본선에 올랐다.
대회 수상자에게는 북구청장상이 주어지며 초등부 대상은 50만원, 중등부 대상은 70만원 등 총 16명에게 350만원의 상금이 지급된다.
배광식 북구청장은 "이번 대회가 영어에 대한 흥미를 불러일으키고 국제 사회를 이끌어갈 초·중등 학생들이 평소 익힌 영어 실력을 마음껏 펼칠 수 있는 장이 되길 바란다"며 "앞으로도 교육국제화특구로서 미래를 이끌어가는 글로벌 창의 인재 양성을 위해 다양한 프로그램을 펼치겠다"고 말했다.

As part of the Education Internationalization Special Zone project, this year's 8th annual contest will be held in an English quiz format. The elementary school competition, for 5th and 6th graders, will be held at 10:00 AM, and the middle school competition, for middle school students, will be held at 3:00 PM.
From September 1st to 17th, 748 elementary and middle school students from across the country, including Daegu, Busan, Ulsan, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, Gyeongsang, and Jeolla provinces, applied.
After 12 days of intense online preliminaries from September 18th to 29th, 73 elementary school students and 90 middle school students advanced to the finals.
The winners of the competition will receive the Buk-gu Mayor's Award, and a total of 3.5 million won in prize money will be awarded to 16 participants, including 500,000 won for the elementary school division and 700,000 won for the middle school division.
Buk-gu Mayor Bae Gwang-sik stated, "I hope this competition will spark interest in English and provide an opportunity for elementary and middle school students, who will lead the global community, to fully demonstrate their acquired English skills." He added, "As a special education internationalization zone, we will continue to implement diverse programs to foster global creative talent who will lead the future."
