‘글로벌 축제’는 외국인 관광객 유치와 한국문화 확산을 위해 전국 문화관광축제 45개 가운데 경쟁력 있는 3개 축제를 선정해 집중 육성하는 사업이다. 이번 선정으로 안동시는 올해부터 3년간 총 24억 원 규모의 국비를 지원받게 된다.
안동국제탈춤페스티벌은 한국 전통 탈 문화와 세계 탈 문화를 함께 즐길 수 있는 국내 유일의 국제 탈 문화 축제로, 1997년 시작 이후 대한민국을 대표하는 전통문화 축제로 성장해 왔다. 특히 2022년 하회별신굿탈놀이가 유네스코 인류무형문화유산에 등재되며 세계적인 문화적 가치를 인정받았다.
이번 글로벌 축제 선정에 따라 안동시는 탈 문화와 세계유산을 결합한 체류형 관광 콘텐츠를 강화해 외국인 관광객 유치에 나설 계획이다.
우선 세계인이 탈을 쓰고 함께 참여하는 ‘글로벌 마스크 야간 퍼레이드’를 비롯해 탈춤과 K-POP을 결합한 참여형 프로그램을 확대하고, 선유줄불놀이를 활용한 야간 콘텐츠도 강화한다. 또한 월영교와 하회마을 등을 연결한 ‘안동 문나잇 투어’와 교통·숙박·체험을 결합한 체류형 관광상품 ‘안동 패스&스테이’도 운영할 예정이다.
이와 함께 축제장과 세계문화유산인 병산서원, 하회마을, 월영교 등을 연계해 관광객이 지역에 머무르며 문화를 체험할 수 있는 체류형 관광 모델을 구축하고, 경북 북부권 지자체와 협력한 연계 관광상품도 개발할 계획이다.
또한 해외 온라인 여행사(OTA)와 협력해 글로벌 관광객이 축제 상품을 직접 예약할 수 있는 시스템을 구축하고, 공항과 KTX 안동역에서 축제장까지 연결하는 외국인 전용 셔틀버스와 글로벌 안내 서비스도 도입한다.
아울러 안동호 권역에서 추진 중인 메리어트 호텔 등 숙박 인프라 확충과 수상 공연장 조성, 미디어파사드 등 야간 관광 콘텐츠와도 연계해 체류형 글로벌 관광도시 기반을 강화할 방침이다.
안동시 관계자는 “안동국제탈춤페스티벌의 글로벌 축제 선정은 한국 전통문화의 가치와 안동의 문화관광 경쟁력을 세계적으로 인정받은 결과”라며 “탈 문화와 세계유산, 미식, 체험 콘텐츠를 결합해 세계인이 찾는 글로벌 K-헤리티지 축제로 발전시켜 나가겠다”고 말했다.

First, the city will expand interactive programs combining mask dance and K-pop, including the "Global Mask Night Parade," where visitors from around the world will wear masks and participate. Nighttime activities will also be enhanced, utilizing the Seonyu Julbulnori festival. Furthermore, the city plans to launch the "Andong Moon Night Tour," connecting Wolyeonggyo Bridge and Hahoe Village, and the "Andong Pass & Stay," a tourism product combining transportation, accommodations, and experiences.
Furthermore, the city plans to establish a tourism model that connects the festival site with World Heritage sites like Byeongsan Seowon, Hahoe Village, and Wolyeonggyo Bridge, allowing tourists to stay in the area and experience the local culture. Furthermore, the city plans to develop linked tourism products in collaboration with local governments in the northern Gyeongsangbuk-do region.
Furthermore, the city will collaborate with international online travel agencies (OTAs) to establish a system where global tourists can directly book festival packages.
