이날 울진해양경찰서(서장 조석태)에 따르면 해양오염사고는 지난1일부터 2일 사이 내린 눈과 비로 본선 크레인상부 굴곡진 부분에 남아 있던 눈이 녹으면서 크레인 엔진과 바닥의 기름과 썩여 해상으로 약 1ℓ정도가 유출됐다.

신고를 접수한 해경은, 해양오염방제과, 죽변파출소, 민간자율구조대 등 12명을 현장에 출동시켜, 선박 1척과 유흡착재를 동원해 방제조치를 벌여 2차 오염사고를 막았다.
울진해양경찰서 관계자는 이처럼 바다에 기름을 유출할 경우 최고 3년이하 징역 또는 3천만원이하 벌금에 처해 질 수 있다며 선박관리에 세심한 주의를 당부했다.
