[브레이크뉴스=정철규 기자] 진주시는 지난 1986년에 개원한 진양호동물원의 확대 이전을 추진한다고 13일 밝혔다.
조규일 진주시장은 진주시청 브리핑룸에서 진양호동물원 이전의 필요성과 이전 대상지, 조성 방향 등에 대한 설명과 대한민국 대표 동물행동풍부 생태동물원으로 조성할 계획이라고 말했다.
진양호동물원은 38년의 세월이 흘러 시설 노후와 부지 협소에 따른 동물복지 실현의 한계, 산지형으로 인한 이용 불편 등으로 지속적인 시설 개선과 이전에 대한 필요성이 제기되어 왔다.
이에 시는 현재 진양호전망대와 가까운 공원 정상부에 있는 진양호동물원을 서진주IC와 가까운 진양호 후문 상락원 일원 산자락 계곡부로 확대 이전할 계획이다.
동물원을 확대 이전하게 되면 부지면적은 약 4만㎡에서 약 29만㎡ 규모로 확대돼 약 7배 이상 증가하고 사육면적은 약 6000㎡에서 약 4만㎡ 규모로 6배 이상 증가한다.
또 시는 보호가 필요한 천연기념물 진양호 수달이나 반달가슴곰, 독수리 등 멸종위기종의 경우는 동물복지 실현에 부합하는 친환경 생태공간을 갖출 계획이다.
또한 시는 야생동물을 서식지에서 보전하기 어렵거나 종 보존을 할 수 있도록 ‘서식지외 보전기관’으로 지정받아 전문인력을 통한 체계적이고 지속적인 모니터링, 관리가 될 수 있도록 진행한다.
