브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 현대자동차가 하수처리장 폐기물로부터 얻은 바이오가스를 활용해 청정수소를 생산하고, 이를 통해 탄소 감축과 수소 생태계 활성화에 앞장선다.
현대차는 지난 24일 충청북도 청주시청에서 서강현 현대차 기획재경본부장, 이범석 청주시장, 김진균 고등기술연구원장 등 주요 관계자들이 참석한 가운데, ‘바이오가스를 활용한 청정수소 생산시설 구축 및 수소 생태계 활성화를 위한 업무협약식’을 진행했다고 25일 밝혔다.
이번 협약은 지난 3월 환경부가 주관한 바이오가스 활용 청정수소 생산시설 구축사업 공모에서 현대차-고등기술연구원 컨소시엄이 민간사업자로 최종 선정된 것을 계기로 이뤄졌다.
협약에 따라 현대차는 2024년까지 청주시 공공하수처리장 부지에 유기성 폐기물로부터 얻은 바이오가스로 하루 500kg의 청정수소를 생산할 수 있는 시설을 구축하고, 이후 증설을 통해 2027년에는 하루 생산량을 1000kg까지 늘릴 방침이다.
아울러 인근에 수소충전소를 함께 설치해 부생수소 대비 합리적인 가격의 청정수소를 지역주민에게 우선적으로 공급하고, 향후 수소버스와 수소청소트럭 등 청주시 내 공익 목적의 차량까지 공급 대상을 확대할 계획이다.
특히, 수소 사업 활성화 정책에 힘쓰고 있는 충청북도 청주시와 국내 최초로 바이오가스를 활용한 청정수소 사업화 실증 경험을 보유하고 있는 고등기술연구원과의 협력을 통해 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
현대차 관계자는 “이번 협약을 시작으로 자원순환형 친환경 수소 사업을 본격적으로 전개하고자 한다”며 “앞으로 국내에서는 청정수소 생산시설 구축 사업을 지속적으로 추진하고, 향후 해외 사업 모델도 함께 개발해 글로벌 수소 생태계 리더십을 확보해 나갈 계획이다”고 말했다.
