필자의 추억담 하나. 필자는 지난 1997년 주간현대를 창간했었다. 그 이전, 토요신문(주간신문)-일요서울(주간신문)에서 6년간(1990-1996년) 근무했었다. 이 두 매체에서 편집국장으로 일했다. 1979년 이후 지금까지 주간신문-인터넷 언론 쪽에만 있었으니, 한국 언론계로서는 비주류인 셈이다.
주간현대(주간신문) 등록
필자는 일요서울 편집국장으로 3년을 재직했다. 이 때, 한국경제신문사 외간부에서 인쇄를 했었다. 1997년 4월 주간현대를 창간하기로 결심하고, 김영삼 정부의 공보처(오인환 장관)로부터 주간현대(주간신문)의 등록을 필했다.
그런데 주간현대를 창간하려면, 신문을 인쇄할 인쇄소가 필요했다. 여러 인쇄소를 접촉해도 부동산 보증 물건이 없으면 인쇄가 곤란하다는 것이었다. 아마도 외상이 쌓이면, 인쇄비를 받을 수 없었기에 그랬을 것이다.

주간신문을 창간하고 싶은데, 자금의 보유가 미미하니 여건이 불비(不備)한 셈이다. 고민하다가 일요서울의 인쇄를 담당해왔던 한국경제 신문사(서울시 중구 청파로 463) 외간부의 최우현 국장을 찾아갔다.

“제가 주간신문 등록을 했는데, 신문을 인쇄할 수 있게 해 주십시오. 다른 데 가봤는데 담보 부동산이 없다고 모두 거절했습니다.”
“우리 신문사(한국경제 신문사)도 마찬가지이죠.”
그 분은 한참 고민을 했다.
“내가 문 국장(문일석)을 3년간 지켜봤는데, 신문을 아주 잘 만들었고, 판매도 아주 잘된 것으로 알고 있어요. 그래도 부동산 담보가 있어야 하는데...”
“국장님, 저는 집도 절도 없어요. 담보꺼리가 없어요. 어떡하죠?”
가진 재산이라곤 아무 것도 없었다. 그러하니 담보를 맡길만한 부동산이 없었다. 최우현 국장의 얼굴에는 고민이 가득했다. 남의 일인데도.
“알았어요. 문일석 국장께서 발간하려는 주간신문은 꼭 성공하리라고 확신합니다. 제가 언론계 생활로만 잔뼈가 굵었는데, 지금 살고 있는 아파트가 한 채 있어요. 나의 전 재산인, 내 아파트를 담보로 잡고서라도, 꼭 인쇄를 해 드릴게요.”
“감사합니다~"
최우현 국장님 덕분에 주간현대 신문을 한국경제 신문사 외간부에서 인쇄할 수 있게 됐다. 이 때의 고마움 때문에 1997년부터 2023년 7월, 오늘날까지 한국경제 신문사에서 인쇄를 해오고 있다. 지난 26년 간, 한 달 치의 외상도 없었다. 당월 결제로, 미수금 없이 거래했었다. 고마움에 대한 '은혜 갚음'의 일종이었다. 운이 좋기도 했다?
대한민국, 정말로 좋은 국가
나에게 은혜를 준 분에 대한, 나로서의 할 일에 충실했던 기간이었다. 최우현 국장님은 그 후 한국 경제신문사에서 정년을 했고, 가톨릭 출판사에서 근무하다가 은퇴하신 걸로 알고 있다. 고마우신 분이다.
“최우현 국장님 감사합니다.”
이런 분들의 숨은 배려가 오늘의 필자(문일석 주간신문 '주간현대'+인터넷 신문 '브레이크뉴스'의 오너)를 만든 자양분이 됐다.
