교육 사회공헌 활동에 앞장서 온 부영그룹과 이중근 회장이 올해 하반기 외국인 유학생 99명에게 4억 원을 전달하는 등 총 100억 원의 장학금을 기부했다.
최근 저출산 문제 해결을 위해 출산 직원 자녀 1명당 출산장려금 1억 원을 지급해 주목 받고 있는 부영그룹 우정교육문화재단(이사장 이중근)이 누적 장학금 100억 원을 기부했다고 8월 20일 밝혔다. 부영그룹은 2008년 재단 설립 후 현재까지 15년째 장학금을 지급해 오고 있다. 부영그룹에 따르면 그간 아시아, 아프리카, 중남미 등 43개국 출신 외국인 유학생 총 2548명에게 누적 100억 원의 장학금을 전달했다.
우정교육문화재단은 8월 20일 대한상공회의소에서 ‘2024년 2학기 외국인 유학생 장학금 수여식’을 갖고 국내 대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 33개국 99명에게 장학금 4억200만 원을 기부했다.
장학생으로 선발된 스리랑카 출신 산지와 푸쉬파쿠마라(중앙대학교 영화영상제작 전공 박사과정)는 “한국에서 유학 생활을 하며 경제적인 어려움으로 힘든 순간이 많았는데 이중근 이사장을 비롯한 우정교육문화재단의 든든한 지원 덕분에 학업에만 열중할 수 있었다”면서 “향후 고국으로 돌아가 한국에서 받은 사랑을 나누고 알리는 역할을 하고 싶다”고 말했다.
이중근 우정교육문화재단 이사장은 “고향을 떠나 타국에서 홀로 지내야 하는 외국인 유학생들이 장학금을 통해 경제적인 부담을 조금이나마 덜고 학업에 매진해 훗날 고국과 한국을 잇는 가교 역할을 해주기 바란다”고 말했다.
부영그룹은 외국인 유학생 장학금 외에도 전국 100여 곳이 넘는 초·중·고에 이중근 회장의 아호를 딴 기숙사인 ‘우정(宇庭)학사’를 설립·기증하는 등 활발한 교육 사회공헌 활동을 펼치고 있다.
이 외에도 캄보디아·라오스에 버스 2000대 기증, 군부대 지원부터 노인복지 향상, 임대료 없는 어린이집에 이르기까지 다양한 분야에서 1조1000억 원이 넘는 비용을 사회 전반에 기부하며 ESG 경영에 앞장서고 있다.

In the second half of this year, Buoyoung Group and its Chairman and CEO, Doo-Keun Lee, donated a total of KRW 10 billion in scholarships, including KRW 400 million to 99 foreign students.
On August 20, the BOOYOUNG GROUP Friendship Education and Culture Foundation (Chairman Doo-Keun Lee), which has recently attracted attention by providing a childbirth subsidy of KRW 100 million for each child of employees who give birth to solve the low birthrate problem, announced that it has donated a cumulative total of KRW 10 billion in scholarships. The foundation has been providing scholarships for 15 years since its establishment in 2008. According to the company, it has provided a total of KRW 10 billion in scholarships to 2,548 international students from 43 countries in Asia, Africa, Central and South America.
On August 20, the Friendship Education and Culture Foundation held a scholarship award ceremony for the second semester of 2024 at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and donated KRW 402 million in scholarships to 99 foreign students from 33 countries enrolled in domestic universities.
Sanji and Pushpakumara from Sri Lanka (PhD student majoring in film and video production at Chung-Ang University), who was selected as a scholarship recipient, said, “I had many difficult moments while studying abroad in Korea due to financial difficulties, but thanks to the reliable support of the Friendship Education and Culture Foundation, including Chairman Doo Geun-geun, I was able to focus on my studies.” “I would like to return to my home country in the future and play a role in sharing and spreading the love I received from Korea.”
“We hope that international students who have to leave their homes and live alone in other countries will be able to ease their financial burdens through the scholarships and pursue their studies, so that they can play a role as a bridge between their home countries and Korea in the future,” said Mr. Doo Geun Lee, Chairman of the Friendship Education Foundation.
In addition to scholarships for international students, BOUYOUNG Group is actively engaged in educational social contribution activities, including establishing and donating dormitories named after Chairman Lee Doo-geun at more than 100 elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide.
In addition, the group has donated 2,000 buses to Cambodia and Laos, and has donated more than KRW 1.1 trillion to the society in various fields ranging from supporting military units to improving welfare for the elderly to rent-free daycare centers, leading the way in ESG management.
