이어 “에디는 북한에서 태어나 중국을 거쳐 한국에 들어왔다. 9년 가까이 서울에서 대학생, 방송인 그리고 사업가로 활동하다 호주로 이민을 떠나 회계사가 됐다. 탈북 귀순자 신분으로 서울에 온 지 얼마 안 된 1995년 3월 말, 에디는 고려대 캠퍼스에서 연합뉴스 김재홍 기자를 만났다. 둘은 처음 만나 고려대 근처 안암동 골목 오소리 순대국밥집에서 점심을 함께 했다. 에디가『북한의 지리여행』(서울:문예산책, 1995)이라는 책을 준비 중이라고 한 게 30년 동행의 시작이 됐다고 한다. 유홍준 전 문화재청장의 『나의 문화유산답사기』 열풍이 불 때였다. 에디는 북한에서 청진광산금속종합대학 지구물리탐사학과를 다녔다. 지리탐사 실습을 위해 북한 곳곳을 다녀 대동여지도를 만들기 위해 조선 전역을 답사한 북한판 조선시대 김정호를 닮았다”면서 “이 책 출간 이후 에디는 KBS 북한 관련 프로그램 ‘남북의 창’에 고정 출연자가 됐다. 이어 『평양 가서 돈 버는 108가지 아이디지리여행』등 북한 관련 책들을 잇따라 출간했다. 사업에도 손을 대어, 평양옥류관 서울분점을 강남에 열었다. 실향민 등 전국에서 온 손님들이 옥류관 냉면 맛을 보기 위해 문전성시를 이뤘다고 한다. 그러다가 영국으로 어학연수 겸 유학을 떠났고 아이들 장래를 위해 호주 이민을 결행했다. 에디 아내가 시드니에서 고등학교와 대학을 나온 호주 시민권자라는 점도 호주 이민을 결정하는 데 영향을 줬다고 한다. 하지만 호주에서 생활은 전혀 녹록하지 않았다. 모든 것을 새로 시작해야 했다. 골프장 청소원, 우버 기사, 카센터 세일즈맨 등 닥치는 대로 일했다. 당장의 생활안정도 중요하지만 늙어서 자식들에게도 존경받으려면, 에디는 전문직 자격증을 따야겠다고 생각했다. 고려대에서 경영학과를 졸업한 경력을 살려 호주에서 경영대학원(MBA)에 진학, 회계사(IPA) 자격을 취득했다. 덕분에 회계사와 대북투자전문가로서 성공 궤도에 올라서게 됐다. 호주에서 북한 지하자원 투자전문 회계사로도 인정을 받았다. 에디는 북한의 지하자원이 남한과 북한, 한반도가 공존 번영하는 데 미래의 금맥이 될 수 있게 기여하고 싶었다.”고 전했다.
이어 “호사다마라고 할까, 전혀 예상치 못한 일이 벌어졌다. 선천성 신장기형이 에디 몸에서 발견됐다. 신장을 이식하지 않으면 몇 년밖에 살 수 없다는 시한부 선고를 받았다. 그러나 절망 끝에 기적이 찾아왔다. 에디 몸에 아내의 신장을 이식하는 데 문제가 없다는 판정이 나왔다. 아무런 망설임도 없이 신장 하나를 내어준 아내 덕분에 새 생명을 얻었다. 두만강을 넘어 중국에서 인천항을 통해 한국으로 귀순, 자유의 새 삶을 얻었는데 또 한 번 생명을 얻었다. 시한부 삶에서 벗어나자, 탈북 32년이 주마등처럼 지나갔다. 기록으로 남겨두지 않으면 누구도 기억하지 않는 삶이 될 것 같았다. 에디는 북한, 한국, 영국, 호주 등 체제와 환경이 전혀 다른 곳에서 살았다. 환경과 언어, 체제가 다른 곳에서 만난 사람들 그리고 어려움을 극복할 수 있었던 원동력 등을 이 책을 통해 이야기하고 싶었다고 한다. 무엇보다 “한국과 호주 등 자본주의 시장경제 체제에서 누구보다 잘 적응할 수 있던 원천이 무엇이었을까?”라는 물음에 답하고 싶었기 때문이다. 에디는 우리 민족의 핏속에 흐르는 개성상인의 DNA가 자신의 심장을 두드려 깨웠다고 생각한다. 개성상인 DNA는 인간의 가장 본능적인 성공에 대한 욕구이자 자본주의 기업가 정신이라고 할 수 있다. 또 요즘 세계가 주목하는 K-기업가 정신과도 통할 수 있다는 것이다. 에디는 또 북한을 떠나온 후배들에게도 들려주고 싶은 이야기도 이 책에서 솔직하게 털어놓는다. 나이와 상관없이 가능한 남한의 교육기관에서 교육을 받아라. 남한에 온 이상 자본주의의 꽃인 돈벌이에 집중해야 한다. 돈을 모으면 차별에서 벗어날 수 있다. 돈을 번만큼 사회적 지위를 부여받는다. 어느 정도 자리 잡기 시작하면 고향을 생각하며 부모 형제를 도와라. 등“이라고 덧붙였다.
