윤석열 대통령이 10일 민주평화통일자문회의(민주평통) 미주지역 자문위원들을 만나 "북한 선전·선동에 동조하는 사회 일각 반대한민국 세력에 맞서 자유 힘으로 나라 미래를 지켜 달라"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 이날 오후 서울 광진구 그랜드 워커힐 서울에서 '자유 평화 번영의 통일 대한민국' 주제로 열린 민주평화통일자문회의 해외지역회의 미주지역 자문위원 통일 대화 행사에 참석해 격려사에서 8·15 통일 독트린을 역설하며 "국민들이 자유 가치에 대해 굳건한 믿음을 가져야 한다"며 이같이 당부했다. 대통령 직속 헌법기관인 민주평통은 대통령이 의장이다.
그러면서 "자유민주주의에 입각한 평화통일 추진은 헌법이 대통령·국민에게 명령한 신성한 책무"라며 "자유민주주의 체제에 대한 우리 신념이 확고할 때 북한 주민을 향한 '자유 통일' 메시지도 더 크고 힘차게 뻗어나갈 수 있으며 자유 통일 대한민국을 앞당기기 위해 모든 힘을 쏟겠다"고 밝혔다.
이어 "미래세대에 자유 통일이 안겨 줄 새로운 꿈·기회를 알리고 북한 인권 개선을 위한 국내외적 노력에 박차를 가하겠다"며 "자유 통일 비전을 실현하기 위해선 국제사회와의 긴밀한 연대·협력이 중요하다"고 강조했다.
더불어 "해외 자문위원들이 자유 통일 비전을 국제사회에 알리고 처참한 북한 인권 현실을 개선하는 데 앞장서 달라"고 주문했다
이날 회의는 8·15 통일 독트린 관련 해외 자문위원 이해 제고 차원에서 열렸다. 윤 대통령은 취임 후 매년 민주평통 회의에 참석하고 있고, 지난 2022년 해외지역회의와 지난해 전체회의에 이어 이번이 세 번째다.
미주지역 자문위원들은 현지 기관·단체와 연계하는 '한반도 자유통일 포럼''해외 거주 미래세대를 위한 통일교육 프로그램'등을 제안하고 '자유 평화 번영의 통일 대한민국을 위한 결의문'을 낭독하며 통일공공외교·북한 인권 개선·북한 내 자유 확산·탈북민 정착 지원에 앞장설 것을 다짐했다.
결의문 낭독 후 윤 대통령과 참석자들은 "자유 평화 번영의 통일 대한민국"을 외치며 수건을 펼치는 퍼포먼스를 한 가운데 수건엔 '자유 평화 번영' '북한 인권 개선' '먼저 온 통일' 등 문구가 새겨졌다.
이 자리엔 김관용 민주평통 수석부의장·태영호 사무처장·대통령실 신원식 국가안보실장·김태효 국가안보실 제1차장·미주지역 25개 국 20개 지역협의회에서 730여 명 자문위원이 참석한 가운데 이날 오지 못한 자문위원 460여 명은 현지에서 온라인으로 함께했다.
