인천시에 따르면, 공공조형물은 도로나 공원 등 공공시설 내에 설치된 상징조형물(상징탑, 기념비 등), 환경시설물(분수대, 폭포 등), 조형시설물(조각, 공예 등)을 말하며, 시민의 일상 공간에 예술적 가치를 더하는 주요 요소다.
이번 실태조사는 지난 5월부터 인천시 및 10개 군·구, 산하 공공기관에서 관리하고 있는 관내 공공조형물을 대상으로 실시됐으며, 공공조형물의 건립 및 철거 현황, 현재 상태, 보수 여부 등을 종합적으로 점검했다.
조사 결과, 인천시 관내 공공조형물은 총 613점으로, 이 중 상징조형물이 166점, 환경시설물 168점, 조형시설물 221점, 기타 조형물이 58점이며, 전년도 대비 76점이 증가한 것으로 나타났다.
