1968년 설립된 서원대학교는 5만 5천여 명의 인재를 배출하며 충청권을 대표하는 명문 사학으로 자리매김해 왔다. 특히 교원양성을 중심으로 축적된 교육 역량을 바탕으로 꾸준히 교사를 배출하며 교육 발전에 기여하고 있다.

최근 2026학년도 유·중등 교원임용시험에서 180명의 합격자를 배출하며 역대 최다 기록을 세웠다. 이는 2025학년도 142명 대비 크게 증가한 수치로, 전국 단위 교원양성 대학으로서의 경쟁력을 다시 한번 입증했다.
이러한 성과는 교원양성 체계에 대한 객관적 평가에서도 확인되고 있다. 서원대학교는 교육부와 한국교육개발원이 실시한 2025년 6주기 교원양성기관 역량진단에서 최우수 등급인 A등급을 획득했다. 이는 2021년 5주기 평가에 이어 2회 연속 최우수 등급으로, 교원양성 운영 체계와 교육성과 전반이 국가 단위 평가에서 인정받은 결과다.
서원대학교는 이러한 성과의 기반으로 교수진·동문교사·재학생이 긴밀히 협력하는 교육 체계를 운영하고 있다. 특히 전국 사범대학 가운데 유일하게 교원임용시험 2차 전형까지 책임 지도하는 체계를 구축해 예비교사의 실전 역량을 강화하고 있다.
또한 예비교사캠프, 미래교육캠프, 줄탁동시캠프, 혁신수업나눔축전, 줄탁학습공동체 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영하며 예비교사의 수업 역량과 교육 전문성을 체계적으로 강화하고 있다.
이 같은 노력의 결과로 최근 8년간(2019~2026학년도) 교원임용시험 합격자는 1,064명에 이르며, 전국적으로 5천여 명의 동문 교사가 교육 현장에서 활동하고 있다.

특히 서원대학교는 RISE사업을 통해 지역 산업과 연계한 교육 프로그램을 확대하고 지역 정주형 인재 양성 체계를 구축하며 충북 지역 혁신을 이끄는 핵심 대학으로 자리매김하고 있다.
현재 서원대학교는 RISE사업 1차년도 과제의 마무리 단계에 접어들었으며, 사업 성과를 기반으로 지역 산업과 연계한 교육·연구·평생교육 프로그램을 지속적으로 확대할 계획이다.
서원대학교는 RISE사업과 연계한 평생교육 확대에도 힘을 쏟고 있다.
특히 RISE사업의 대표 과제 가운데 하나인 ‘충북 평생교육 생산기지 실현’ 과제를 통해 5년간 총 110억 원 규모의 사업비를 확보했다. 이를 기반으로 신중년을 대상으로 한 학위 및 비학위 교육과정을 운영하며 직업 전환과 재취업을 지원하는 평생직업교육 프로그램을 추진하고 있다.
성인 학습자를 위한 단과대학인 ‘미래대학’ 운영도 활발하다. 2026학년도 기준 341명의 신·편입생이 입학했으며 현재 총 766명의 재학생이 학업을 이어가고 있다. 운영 전공은 8개 전공으로 직무 중심 교육과정을 통해 성인 학습자의 학습 수요를 반영하고 있다. 대학은 앞으로도 RISE사업과 연계해 평생직업교육 프로그램을 확대하고 지역 주민과 산업체가 함께 참여하는 평생교육 체계를 구축해 나갈 계획이다.
한편 서원대학교는 미래 산업 변화에 대응하기 위한 교육 혁신도 추진하고 있다.
대학은 2027학년도 개설을 목표로 AI로봇학과 신설을 추진하고 있으며, 지역 보건의료 인력 수요에 대응하기 위한 간호학과 설립도 함께 추진하고 있다. AI로봇학과는 인공지능과 로봇 기술 발전에 따른 산업 구조 변화에 대응해 첨단 기술 분야 인재를 양성하기 위한 학과로 준비되고 있으며, 간호학과는 고령화 사회 진입과 보건의료 서비스 수요 증가에 대응해 전문 의료 인력을 양성하기 위한 학과로 추진되고 있다.
