대학배구도 한국 배구의 국제경쟁력 향상을 위해 팔을 걷어붙였다. 국내에서만 경쟁하고 안주하기보다 세계 강팀들과 맞대결을 통해 성장하겠다는 취지이다.
'2023 번패티번·문경 8개국 초청 국제 대학배구 대회'가 오는 8월 26일(토)부터 31일(목)까지 6일 동안 경상북도 문경시 국군체육부대 선승관에서 열린다.
이번 대회는 총 8개국의 남자 대학과 프로팀 소속 배구 유망주들이 국제 대회를 통해 경기력을 향상시키고, 국제적 교류와 우정의 장을 마련하기 위해 창설했다.
이번 대회는 한국대학배구연맹과 대한배구협회가 주최하고, 경상북도 문경시와 수제버거 전문 브랜드 번패티번(BUN PATTY BUN)이 후원한다. 특히 문경시는 대회의 성공적 개최를 위해 행정적 지원에 총력을 기울일 예정이다.
8개 출전 국가는 대한민국, 미국, 영국, 호주, 일본, 중국, 태국, 베트남이다.
경기 방식은 조별 예선 리그, 준결승, 결승 3단계로 진행된다. 조별 예선 리그는 8개국이 4팀씩 A, B 2개 조로 나뉘어 풀 리그를 펼친다. 이후 각 조의 1위와 2위가 준결승(4강)에 진출한다. 준결승은 A조 1위-B조 2위, B조 1위-A조 2위가 크로스로 맞대결한다. 그리고 준결승의 승자가 대망의 결승전을 치른다.
조별 예선 리그에서 A조는 한국, 일본, 중국, 태국, B조는 미국, 영국, 호주, 베트남이 편성됐다. 대회 첫 개막 경기는 숙명의 한일전이다.

이번 대회에서 대한민국 대표팀은 김찬호 경희대 감독이 사렁탑을 맡는다. 코치는 곽승철 홍익대 코치, 트레이너는 전성규 경희대 트레이너가 선임됐다. 김찬호 감독은 이번 대회를 성사시키기 위해 많은 국제적 노력을 기울이기도 했다.
대표팀 선수는 프로 신인급 선수 5명, 대학 유망주 9명으로 총 14명이 발탁됐다.
아웃사이드 히터에는 이준(대한항공·187cm), 박승수(OK저축은행·193cm), 신성호(명지대·190cm), 이윤수(경기대·199cm), 아포짓은 박예찬(경희대·200cm)이 선발됐다.
미들블로커는 정태준(현대캐피탈·199cm), 김진영(충남대·195cm), 양수현(경기대·201cm), 조진석(경희대·216cm), 세터는 신승훈(KB손해보험·195cm), 최원빈(경기대·185cm), 리베로는 장지원(한국전력·180cm), 성한희(경희대·175cm), 신윤호(홍익대·180cm)가 맡는다.
