과천시가 서울대학교 산학협력단, 한국푸드테크협의회와 ‘월드푸드테크센터 설립 및 푸드테크 혁신 특구 조성을 위한 업무협약’을 체결하며 푸드테크 생태계 조성에 본격 나섰다.
푸드테크는 식품(Food)과 기술(Technology)의 합성어로, 코로나-19 이후 친환경·개인맞춤형·비대면 식품 소비로 소비 트렌드가 변화함에 따라 식품의 생산부터 유통, 소비 전 과정에 AI, BT, 로봇 등 첨단기술을 접목해 기존 식품 산업에 혁신을 꾀하는 신산업이다.
지난 10월 6일, 디테크타워(과천대로7길 33) 미래홀에서 열린 이날 행사에는 신계용 과천시장과 김재영 서울대학교 산학협력단장, 이기원 한국푸드테크협의회장 등 관계자 20여명이 참석했다.
협약은 과천시는 월드푸드테크센터 유치를 위한 입주 공간, 제반 시설 및 관련 인프라 조성을 지원하고, 서울대학교 산학협력단은 과천시에 월드푸드테크센터를 설립하여 푸드테크 관련 스타트업 기업을 유치하며, 한국푸드테크협의회는 센터 내 입주한 기업들이 산업을 선도하도록 기술 및 사업아이템을 개발하고, 해외 푸드테크 네트워크를 조성하는 역할을 맡는 것을 주 내용으로 하고 있다.
과천시는 이번 협약을 발판으로, 세계적으로 주목받고 있는 신산업 분야인 푸드테크 산업 생태계를 지역 내에 조성하여, 푸드테크 산업을 선도하는 도시로 거듭나겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.

신계용 과천시장은 “미래 먹거리이자 생명산업인 푸드테크 산업의 성장에 과천시가 함께하게 되어 기쁘다. 산·관·학이 함께 협력하여 성공적으로 푸드테크 생태계를 조성해나가도록 하겠다”라며 “과천의 새로운 성장동력이 되어줄 푸드테크 산업의 발전을 위해 행정적 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”며, 월드푸드테크 생태계 조성에 힘쓸 것을 약속했다.
서울대학교 푸드테크학과장이자 한국푸드테크협의회장인 이기원 교수는 “세계적으로 푸드테크 산업이 각광을 받고 있고, 한국에서도 다양한 푸드테크 관련 기술들이 개발되고 있다. 기술들을 하나로 집약할 수 있는 거점이 필요한 지금, 타 도시와 비교할 수 없는 지리적 입지를 지닌 과천이 한국푸드테크 산업의 허브로서 그 역할을 톡톡히 수행할 것이라 기대한다”고 말했다.
과천시는 농림축산식품부에서 추진하는 푸드테크 3대 추진전략에 선제적으로 대응하기 위해 과천지식정보타운 R&D센터 내에 ‘푸드테크 수도권 거점센터’를 구축하고 관련 생태계를 지역 내에 구축한다는 목표를 갖고 있다.
